Every day we travel around the city - work, school, kindergartens, rest, shops. Going somewhere, we do not even think that trajectories are initially set by urban planner. Ask yourself – is it comfortable for you to move around city? do you like the environment and buildings? is city enough green? are you satisfied by pedestrian network of the city? is it quick and easy/pleasurable for you to reach a certain destination?
On all these questions, will answer landscape architect/urban planner, since it was he develops the strategy/idea of city, and predicts how it will reflects on the life of residents and users.
The main purpose of landscape architecture is to create a logical and attractive space for humans, where are such elements as: most convenient system of pedestrian links, areas of temporary respite and waiting areas, resting areas, clear visual orientation in urban landscape and its easy memorization. These include the variety of types of palms, trees and shrubs; different paving materials and their design varieties (walkways and squares); small architectural objects. Man moving city should observe changing environment depending on its functional purpose: residential low-build area (example, Springs, Meadows, Arabian Ranches, Greens&Views, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Bur Dubai etc.), residential high-rise build area (example, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai Marina, Downtown, Sport City, residential buildings along Sheikh Zayed road etc.), public areas (parks, squares and crowded places), daily migration zone of working population, units of city infrastructure and pedestrian connections (example, Dubai metro link, tram and bus stops, their interaction with residential areas), industrial zone (ports, factories). Competent design of each area should be done refer to the users load on the landscape. The load on the landscape is the functional use of the landscape by a certain number of people in the particular area within a specified time. This determines the type of urban landscape.
The main disadvantage of a modern cities is the absence of proportion of vertical and horizontal components of the city (the proportion between high-rise buildings and open space), and hyper scalability of highways.
What we can offer in this case? – To create a network of pedestrian connections in such a way that people’s look covers only those parts of the surrounding that is not distracting and does not hinder movement of people, thus giving harmony, tranquility and comfort. To create a characteristic neighborhood design streets using distinctive elements - fountains, art installations, flower beds, signs, sculptures, unique groups of trees, etc., and set short-term rest zones respite given harsh climatic conditions of the desert, which is typical for all countries in the Middle East , they are high temperature, drought, humidity, sand storms and so on. You need to provide enough of the shade (during the hottest hours) along the pedestrian areas. These can be achieved by planting palms or groups of trees, the best shade cover in the region (United Arab Emirates) gives Phoenix Dactilifiera; to install benches for rest and waiting purpose (the best choice of materials in hot climates is given to concrete, stone, timber-wood and certain types of plastic); implement proper lighting with maximum use of sun energy (Dubai is the best example of a complete lighting all over); to provide for all public areas parking for bicycles.
Dubai is developing very rapidly towards acquire the status of sustainable city, many areas are improved according to international sustainability demands. From our hand a single wish to the city is to keep its integrity and to become the best worldwide example of how is formed perfect fabric of the city.
